Ass Kickin’
I got my ass kicked TWICE this past weekend. First by the Guadalupe River, then by a vicious game of quarters.
I went tubing on Saturday. It’s been raining in TX for about a month, so the river is higher than when I’ve gone before. The weather turned out to be perfect, and not ones to be scared by a little flash flooding, we headed out w/ sunscreen and beer and Tim’s visions of making tubing an official sport. He’s still working out the rules - divisions for alcohol consumption, points for tube acrobatics, cooler safety, sunglass or shoe loss, etc.. There were no major incidents except some unusually fast rapids at the very beginning and end of our trip. The first set we had some separation and a lost cooler (which we made up for a few hours later when we found an abandoned cooler full of beer - karma is grand). On the last set, I flipped out of my tube and couldn’t get my footing for 20 or 30 feet and got beat up on some rocks. Jef popped his tube, but thanks to the spare beer cooler, was able to swap it out for a good one (karma x2). I wasn’t in bad shape, but bleeding a little and instantly hungover. Chicken Fried Chicken at the Gristmill went pretty far in making up for it though. There is talk of another tubing trip this summer, since Ben hasn’t gotten to go yet. I haven’t decided yet if I’ll go or I’ve retired for the season.
Sunday I was ready for some R&R. I’d been drinking three days in a row and I felt like I had been hit by a truck. So I went to church (I know, I know), then saw Spiderman 2, and then went to C&N’s. A short while after we got there, someone mentioned quarters. I didn’t go to college, so it wasn’t until 4am that I understood exactly what I had gotten myself into. Ben is a quarter hustler. It’s a shame we didn’t get any pictures (other than of the art projects in the bathroom). There were some really interesting rules and it would have been nice to have a record of us trying to shoot w/ both elbows on the table, one hand over our eye and one thumb on the table. Think about that. Really.
For having very few actual ‘plans’ for 4th of July, it turned out to be a great weekend. A few days to recover, but well worth it.
