Holy crap! The tree pods are figs! I would have told you this yesterday, because that’s actually when I found out, but it’s never that easy, is it? Here’s how it went down.

Giant Tree Shrub

We were out playing fetch w/ Lucy’s new red ball and Jef said “Oh, I forgot, I have to show you something.” He brought me over to the tree-bush and showed me the pods. “Chad said they are figs.” I got so excited and took a bunch of pictures. (Go figure.) Then later I was rambling on about something and said “I can’t believe we have a fig tree in the yard. That’s so cool!” Jef laughed and said “I totally forgot I told you that.” “Why, isn’t it true?” “Sure it is.” From that moment I believed he’d made it all up and went on a wild goose chase to find out what kind of tree it “really” was. Today on a whim I decided to look up “fig tree” and guess what kind of tree it is, folks?

Despite the round-about way I got here, that’s pretty freaking cool. But let me tell you, there are already HUNDREDS of small fruits on there. All the information I’ve been reading on them say that the first year there’s enough fruit for one family, and in subsequent years there’s enough for a neighborhood. I’ve started looking up recipes and tips for drying them, but there’s only so much I can do. So get ready, Austin friends. You’ll be getting fresh figs whether you like them or not.
