FIGS!
Oh! I almost forgot. I was out in the yard the other day w/ Lucy and realized it had been a LONG time since I’d seen all the green pods on the tree bush, and when was I going to have FIGS already? So I went over and guess what I found?! It’s unbelievable how many there are. I’ve brought two containers of them into work, and people are asking for more.
If you haven’t had one, they are a little intimidating. I find myself showing people how to eat them as an example, but also as reassurance that I’m not trying to poison them. The taste is a little hard to describe. They are sweet, but subtle. They have seeds, but they are small, and not hard like a a raspberry. The flavor is mild, like a plum is, but they have a flavor all their own. So far, everyone who has tasted them has been surprised. “That’s what a fig tastes like?! Why don’t we eat these more? Why aren’t they in the store?”
Because I have EIGHT MILLION of them on my tree. You can have them for free. :)

You need to find a way to package them and send some of the EIGHT MILLION you have to your sister!

Best of the Austin blogs post this week! Maybe someone will take you up on your free fig offer.

ooh, nice honor (best of Austin blogs mention)! I was going to comment on the lovely picture and say that you did a nice job inspiring your readers to want to eat figs! I think I ate a kumquat last night for the first time (it was peeled and unlabeled at the chinese buffet). It tasted like a pear, but with a slightly different texture. Just so you know.

Jen - If it’s still producing I’ll bring as many with me as I can to Wyoming with me in August. You’ll be figged out.
E - THANK YOU! I am getting a little tired of climbing IN the tree to get these things though. I’m telling my co-workers if they want many more of them, they might have to help me come pick ‘em.
Kat - A kumquat! Aren’t you adventurous. I don’t know that I would have tried it w/ out a label. How did you know what it was? “Ma’am, that’s a poisonous garnish”.

Seems you don’t have as many fig-crazy bluejays as I do in my backyard. The thieves. I can only hope they are doing their part in fertilizing the seeds around the neighborhood…
