We’re experiencing some major rain in Texas this summer, evidenced by all the news coverage we’ve been getting (and phone calls from friends asking if we’ve washed away). Austin itself hasn’t been bad in terms of flooding, it’s mostly the surrounding counties, but we’ve still had an insane amount of rain. I’ve never lived somewhere with this type of flash flood rain. It can be sunny one minute, then WHAM! it’s like standing in a shower on the parking lot of Target. And the water comes so FAST up the sidewalks and car tires, it’s really unsettling. There’s even a campaign to educate people about the dangers of driving on flooded roads (“Turn around, Don’t Drown”).

A nice byproduct of all this rain is that our lawn is green, green, green (and tall, tall, tall, but Jef swears he’ll cut it today). This time last year we were in the middle of a drought. Our lawn was brown and crunchy and we were on a city recommended watering schedule. What a difference a year makes.

I took this video last week on my way to work. It wasn’t raining when I left the house, but a few blocks later, here we were.
