SXSW Music
SXSW Music descended upon the city last week in a wave of skinny jeans, fedoras, man purses and emo hair. For all that individuality, there sure were a lot of people looking exactly the same.
I didn’t have a badge or wristband for music, just for Interactive (those are my people!) so I had to scavenge music where I could find it. Basically I swung a dead cat and attended all the free shows I hit. There were a LOT.
I keed, I keed. But seriously, I feel like the festival is jumping the shark a little bit in terms of size and saturation. You can only take in a fraction of what you hope to and the lines are unbelievable.
That said, I did see two unbelievable performances that will stay with me for a long time. The first was Vampire Weekend at the SPIN party. I just discovered them, but apparently I’m behind the popularity curve. They are at the top of the iTunes chart and were on SNL last week. They rocked my world. The second was The Holy F*cks at the Rachel Ray party (which was a very cool gig, but the fact that she was hosting a party to me is EVOO-Bizarro). I’d heard they were awesome (I’d also heard “what the hell are they doing playing the RR party”, but I digress) and they really were. I will be buying albums (via iTunes) from both those groups immediately.
If you were in Austin for SXSW, I hope you had a good time. If you weren’t, I hope you’re happy about your decision. If not, consider about joining us next year - it’s really something to behold.

Wasn’t that a long 10 days? I’m still detox’ing from multiple days of afternoon free showcases.
Nice captures.
