Links for September 15th - September 21st
These are links from my del.icio.us feed for September 15th through September 21st:
- ART: Broadway Across America (Austin) - Jef and I just bought season tickets to 2008/2009 Broadway Across America in Austin. We saw the listings for Avenue Q, Spamalot, Wicked, Rent and a few others and knew it was probably cheaper to go the season ticket route than individually. Now we just have to wait for February to roll around for the shows to start!
- BLOGS: New Retierment Planning for Small Business (Katinger.com) - "If you had purchased $1,000 of Delta Air Lines stock one year ago, you would have $49.00 left. With Enron, you would have had $16.50 left of the original $1, 000. With WorldCom, you would have had less than $5.00 left. But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drunk all of the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling refund, you would have had $214.00. Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle. It’s called the 401-Keg."
- FUN: xkcd cartoon - “The Staple Gun” - This reminds me of Jef (or ANY guy really) when he gets ahold of a staple gun.
- PHOTO: Color Management 101 - This is a hot topic among my photo group right now, so I am sure they will appreciate this video. "The implementation of a good color management system will help you get consistent results when viewing your photos on-screen and when printing them. While implementing color management isn’t critical for the hobbyist, it sure can be nice to make prints that look the image on your monitor. … In this video I’d like to share the very non-technical explanation I’ve used to personally understand it. Hopefully it will remove a little of the mystery and encourage you to explore the further, more technical details."
- More Outdoor Portrait Tips - PHOTO: A good video from Jim Talkington from ProPhotoLife.com (via The Digital Photography School). "This one focuses upon group portraits - with some good tips at the start on focal length and depth of field for portraits."
- DESIGN: Vinyl Silhouette Bird Clock - Love it! We need a new clock in our kitchen and this is super cute. It brings together my love of vinyl stickers, birds AND lime green. I think it's a done deal.
- PHOTO: Observing Ramadan - This is a gorgeous collection of photos. "Observing Ramadan - Muslim faithful throughout the world are currently observing the holy month of Ramadan. Observant Muslims participate in fasting (sawm), one of the five pillars of their faith, this entire Lunar month (this year it extends from September 1st to the 30th). Eating, drinking, smoking and sexual activity is prohibited from dawn until sunset, when the fast is broken with the evening meal called Iftar. Local customs define varying traditions, including differing types of food used to break the daily fast. The fasting is meant to teach a person patience, humility and sacrifice, to set aside time to ask forgiveness, practice self-restraint, and pray for guidance in the future. (35 photos total)"
- FOOD: Sparkling Margarita Floats - I can't decide if this sounds awesome or not, but it has "margarita" in the title, so it can't be ALL bad. I think I'm going to try it at our next BBQ.
- DESIGN: Exploding Dog’s Drawings for Monday - This one is called "I never want to hold another persons hand" and I love it.
- DESIGN: Duct Tape Bandages - "Forget the flesh colored Band-Aids, and opt for some man-approved Duct Tape Bandages ($4). Made from real 3M duct tape, these adhesive bandages are more durable than standard ones, and are even longer to wrap around your sausage fingers."
- TV: Guide to September 2008 Series Premieres - I usually miss working at an advertising agency in August / September - with the mania of upfronts over and fall sweeps beginning. We'd usually have some kind of list telling us what to look out for and what to avoid, but now I have to look for lists like this out on the internet. Bah.
